Back 4 Blood: List Of 13 Easter Eggs

Back 4 Blood is full of Easter eggs that make references to the zombie genre. Here are some of the best ones.

Most types of media are full of callbacks and references. For example, some gaming series have easter eggs that make references to other popular gaming properties. This is also true for Back 4 Blood, a co-op zombie shooter where you beat enemies called “Ridden” to complete stages. Most of these easter eggs are from horror movies and games, which makes sense since Back 4 Blood is all about horror.

Back 4 Blood’s easter eggs are hidden all over the maps. Some are easier to find than others, but you should look for them for yourself.

We All Float Down Here

We All Float Down Here

In all of the different versions of It, Pennywise says, “They all float down here,” which is a threat to the children he wants to kill. During the Pipe Cleaners mission, if you look around, you can find this line painted on one of the walls as a reference.

This quote is right at the beginning of the level. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see checkmarks on the same wall as the quote.

Resident Evil Typewriter

Resident Evil Typewriter

During the Garden Party mission, there is a typewriter hidden in one of the rooms across from the level’s saferoom. And by “sneakily hidden,” we mean put on top of a box in a room you’ll probably go into to see what goodies are waiting for you. Now, this could be any typewriter since it’s not unusual to find one in someone’s house, but it’s probably a reference to the typewriters you save at in the Resident Evil games.

It’s a nice little tribute to the game that shows how great horror movies were before Back 4 Blood.

The Evil Dead Blood Light

The Evil Dead Blood Light

To find the red light, you have to play through the Abandoned level, which has a lot of easter eggs, and go into the shed you have to pass at some point. This one is easy to find because it’s on your way to the mission’s end goal, and the red lights will make you want to take a look inside the scary shed.

The red light might be a reference to the scene in The Evil Dead where blood gets on a light bulb and makes it shine red on the walls. It’s a very well-known scary scene because it looks so good in the movie, and the Back 4 Blood version is a cool tribute to this.

Elm Street And Crystal Lake Signpost

Elm Street And Crystal Lake Signpost

During the Abandoned mission, which is very hard to finish (we know this from experience), there is a street with a sign that says the names of two familiar places. Now, this little Easter egg is pretty cool, but thankfully, you can’t actually go to these places. If you did that, the Ridden wouldn’t be your biggest problem anymore. The names “Elm Street” and “Crystal Lake” refer to the movies “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Friday the 13th.”

When these places are added to the signposts, it makes the mission feel creepy. You won’t run into Jason Voorhees, but just hearing his name is enough to give you the creeps.

Turtle Rock Studios

Turtle Rock Studios

If you’ve ever wondered why turtles are mentioned so often. It’s because the company that made Back 4 Blood is called Turtle Rock Studios. These turtles are sneakily hidden in a fair number of the levels. And you probably won’t find them unless you look around when there’s a break in the game.

Nonetheless, they are usually present in the form of a poster on the wall or a figurine on a shelf.

Possession In The Exorcist

Possession In The Exorcist

You can find a walkie-talkie, binoculars, and a stack of books on a table in the main lobby. One of the books is called “How to: Spin Your Head 360 Degrees While Sitting in Bed.” This is a reference to the scary scene in “The Exorcist” where Regan’s head spins around in a way that doesn’t make sense (and freaky manner.)

The scene where this actually happened isn’t in Back 4 Blood, which is great because there are already so many Bruisers, Tallboys, and Ogres to deal with.

How To Kick Ass When You’re Out Of Bubblegum

How To Kick Ass When You're Out Of Bubblegum

You’ll find a bookshelf with the book “How to Kick Ass When You’re Out of Bubblegum” next to the tent where you edit your cards. This is a reference to John Carpenter’s movie They Live, where the character Nada famously says, “I’ve come here to eat bubble gum and beat people up. And I have no more bubble gum.”

This famous line from They Live is also used by Duke Nukem, so it’s a reference to both games. Talk about easter eggs that are hard to find in video games.

Doom Weapon Skin

Doom Weapon Skin

This easter egg is a little harder to find because weapon skins take a while to unlock. Because you have to buy them the same way you buy cards—through supply lines. The Zombie Slayer skin for the TAC14 is in question. Its pattern looks like the armor Doomslayer wears in the Doom series.

The skin has a green background, orange spots, black skulls. And a color palette that looks like different versions of Doom. Zombie Slayer can be bought at the fifth level of the Grant’s Brew House supply line.

Freddy Kreuger Shirt

Freddy Kreuger Shirt

Aah, as if the fact that Back 4 Blood mentions Freddy Kreuger once wasn’t creepy enough, there’s another one! Just in case you were looking for a few more scary things to add to your Halloween. In the Abandoned stage, there is a closet with a shirt inside that looks a lot like the shirt Freddy Kreuger wears. The zombie apocalypse is scary, and all enemies except those who attack you in your dreams are scary because you can’t get away from them.

It’s an Easter egg that you’re likely to miss if you don’t stop and look around every now and then.

Shaun Of The Dead

Shaun Of The Dead

There are lots of quotes from Shaun of the Dead and other horror movies on the walls of the Back 4 Blood universe. These are called “Easter eggs.” Like the turtle references, these quotes are written on post-it notes and stuck to bulletin boards on most levels.

One says, “Don’t forget to kill Philip,” which is a reference to the movie character with the same name. “And the front door is open again!” says another. a line that came right out of the movie. On these boards, there are references to other movies, like one from Army of Darkness that says, “This is my boom stick.”

The Shining Carpet

The Shining Carpet

When you look for survivors in the apartments during the Book Worms mission. You can see a clear reference to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. You have to be on the top floor of the building, right before going into the room with the survivors. Where you can see that the carpet has the same hexagonal pattern as the one in the movie.

There is also a tricycle near the stairs, just like the one Danny rides on this same carpet in the movie, but you can’t use it.

The Evil Dead Hatch

The Evil Dead Hatch

On the Hell’s Bells map, there is a small cabin that might remind some of you of something. Inside the cabin, there is a bloody hatch that is locked and has two hands sticking out of it. The hatch is a reference to the Evil Dead movies. Where zombies are always trying to get out of them for some reason.

It’s a cool easter egg, especially since the atmosphere of Back 4 Blood is a lot like that of the Evil Dead movies.

Left 4 Dead 2 Theme

Left 4 Dead 2 Theme

Located in the Making of The Grade level has a piano that, when played, plays the Left 4 Dead 2 theme song. The piano is in the school auditorium, next to the gym. You could easily miss it if you don’t pay attention to everything around you. Back 4 Blood has a lot of references to Happy Wheels, but this one is particularly cool because it takes you back to a time when zombie games were more popular than they are now.

The song takes you back to a time when you and your friends would play until the wee hours of the morning and try to convince yourselves that you could just play “one more match.”
